Warrnambool's Darren Mollenoyux can count himself unlucky after suffering a bone crunching wreck on Saturday night (November 25) that has damaged his new Maxim Chassis. At the time of the roll over, Mollenoyux was racing for a second straight heat win which would have placed him on high points leading into the final for the third round of the SRA Super Sprint Series.
“It was our brand new Maxim Chassis we were using on Saturday night and it has been damaged pretty severely,” Mollenoyux stated after surveying the consequence of the back straight roll over.
“We will now put together last seasons Maxim Chassis and go racing again, luckily we do have the spare car. Our next race will be Boxing Night at Avalon in December, which will be a round of the SRA Series,” he said.
Saturday night's event for Mollenoyux was his first race in Victoria for season 2006-2007, with his first meeting of the season at Adelaide's Speedway City for the Sprintcar Masters earlier in November. Mollenoyux was looking forward to racing on his home venue once again, where he has had ample success in the past.
For this season, the Mollenoyux Racing outfit will also have major backing from PWR Performance Products, who have supported the team in the past but will step up their support for this season.
“PWR Performance Products have been fantastic in the past supplying us with product,” said Mollenoyux. “But this season they join us in a greater capacity and we are hoping to achieve some results for them and our other sponsors.”
24-year-old Mollenoyux launched into his first heat on Saturday night in rampaging fashion, taking the win over a number of other talented names including the Dillon brothers. In this heat race, ‘Molly' also set the third fastest recorded lap of the night with an 11.318.
In Mollenoyux's second qualifying heat race, the PWR Performance Products / Warrnambool Crane Hire 52v Maxim quickly shot to the front end of the pack after starting well back in the line up. The ending moment came however, when Mollenoyux attempted a brave passing move under Glen Sutherland for second position in turn two.
The two made contact, which forced Mollenoyux into numerous daunting flips down the back straight and into the catch fence causing everyone to hold some concern. Fortunately, Mollenoyux was fine, but the car itself was now second hand.
“The crash felt big,” Mollenoyux said after the race, with his head still held up high. “I thought I had enough room for the pass over Glen Sutherland, but obviously not and we just learn from that.
“The track was really fast and we were on the pace, I was confident and we were hoping for good things but it was not to be,” said Mollenoyux.
The team will now work hard in the coming weeks to put together their spare Maxim Chassis, with plenty of racing on the radar over the Christmas and January period.
“We are looking to get some good results this season, I think we are ready and fast enough for a podium position, we just have to put it together and find some consistency. An ounce of luck on the racetrack does not go astray either,” Mollenoyux said.
Mollenoyux Racing would like to thank the following sponsors for their support during the 2006-2007 season:
